New Year, IMPROVED You

Did you know it’s estimated that 40% of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions, but only 8% actually achieve their goals?

With every New Year, we are bombarded with messages that encourage a “new you” through resolutions and goal setting. This would suggest that we are in need of a blank slate, do over or complete transformation. Setting this kind of expectation can result in an overwhelming pressure to succeed in this “all or nothing” approach.

For some of us this might be our greatest need, but what if the majority of us are just looking to fine tune the changes we made the previous year? With the start of 2018, I would encourage you to shift your perspective to creating an improved you in the New Year!

To be successful in achieving your New Year’s goals:

Keep it simple. Time management experts and action plans encourage “the big three”: identifying the top three things to get done the next day, week or month.  What if we applied this same approach to New Year’s goals? Take a minute and identify your big three of what you want to accomplish in 2018!

Make it measurable. Now that we’ve simplified our resolutions list, let’s make it realistic. Ensure that your goals can be measured to create tangible success throughout the year. Below are some examples of measurable health-related goals that you could choose from:

  • Drink 64 oz. water daily in the month of January
  • Cut out soda and fast food for the next three months
  • Get moving every day for at least 30 minutes
  • Practice gratitude by writing down three things I’m grateful for in the evening

You get the idea. Applying time frames and numbers to your goals helps make them measurable and realistic for success.

Tell someone. Just like with starting any new venture, I would encourage you to tell someone what your New Year’s goals are. By sharing with a family member, friend, or coworker, you are adding a layer of accountability to keep you motivated in your goals. Better yet, find someone who has a similar goal and buddy up!

Cheers to a New Year and an improved you in 2018!
